Dangerous Secrets (#2 Tall, Dark and Deadly) - Lisa Renee Jones

Author                       Lisa Renee Jones
Publication Date     5 April 2013
Genre                         Adult Suspense Romance

Being a divorce attorney for the rich and famous isn't all it's cracked up to be. Julie Harrison has learned that love doesn't last, and she's sworn never to make the same mistakes as her mother, or her clients. She uses the games men play to keep them at a distance. The only man who managed to break down her walls was Luke Walker, a Navy SEAL who loved her and left her, and changed her forever.

When Luke arrives back in New York, running Walker Security with his brothers and having left his Navy SEAL days behind, he sets his sights on Julie, the woman he's always wanted and couldn't have. Except, she runs from him every time he gets close.

But now, one of Julie's clients, a powerful judge, gets involved with a dangerous cartel, and his soon-to-be-ex wife ends up dead. Julie's next on the list, and she finds herself on the run from those who believe she knows too much, and counting on Luke to keep her alive. In the deepest, darkest moments of the night, passion will bring them together while danger threatens to tear them apart. Can Julie and Luke trust each other and find their happy ending before they find ... the end?

This second instalment of "Tall, Dark and Deadly" takes us on Luke Walker's dangerous journey.

Luke runs the Walker Security alongside his brothers, Jake and Royce, after giving up being a SEAL. The reason for his return is not what everyone has been led to believe. The Walker Brothers have a tight family unit with honourable principles.

Julie is a Divorce Lawyer. She hasn't had much of a family life and her best friend, Lauren is the only family that she has.

Luke and Julie had a no commitment relationship in the past and parted ways on the premise that it was casual and temporary. She doesn’t believe in long term relationships due to her own experience with her mother, and those of her clients who go through complicated and difficult divorces. Now that Royce and Lauren are getting married, she can’t really avoid meeting Luke.

Their first reunion at the airport brings back feelings that Julie would rather forget. She likes to fend for herself. That's what she has always done. When she finds herself in the middle of a dangerous situation involving corruption and the Cartel, Luke can't bear thinking of the worse case scenario. With drug trafficking, money laundering and forgeries, danger is always imminent. He willingly gets involved, even if it means putting his own life on the line. He is also determined to break down the emotional barrier that Julie uses as an escape from getting involved.

I like Julie's caring side but her stubbornness can be irritating. When it comes to her commitment phobia, she refuses to be reasonable. Luke is not easily deterred and fights tooth and nails to get what he wants. The chemistry between them is sizzling hot and this treacherous position that they are in, only reaffirms their feelings. Besides close family and friends, it's hard to know who to trust. Traitors and danger are everywhere. It's a well woven plot which pulled me right in.

I was completely immersed in this fast, furious, sexy and romantic journey. I now look forward to reading Blake's story.

Publication date: May 23rd 2017
Genres: Contemporary,
New Adult, Romance

Gwen Stevens had a privileged life until her father spoke three little words that turned her world upside down. “You’re cut off.”

Broke and desperate, Gwen is forced to accept a waitressing job, but this glimmer of hope has a price. As if being a cocktail waitress isn’t bad enough, she has to do it in a dive bar called The Den, and her bad luck doesn’t stop there. She also needs to deal with the new owner, a blue-eyed, self-righteous ass determined to make her life miserable.

Liam Sinclair walked away from the entitlement and obligation his family planned for him, vowing to make his own way in the world…

Adjusting to life as a new business owner, Liam has experienced more than his fair share of setbacks. When his only waitress breaks her leg, his sister takes it upon herself to hire a replacement—a spoiled, self-indulgent hothead with too much makeup and more than enough attitude. Gwen represents the world he’s trying to escape, a world of excess and greed that he was never cut out for.

Appearances can be deceiving, and first impressions aren’t always right.

Despite their apparent differences, the tension between them turns to a fiery passion that neither of them can resist. Together they find balance and learn to appreciate the simpler things in life. But Gwen soon discovers that old habits die hard, and one mistake is all it takes to ruin everything.

Forgiveness must be earned, but even a villain deserves a chance at redemption…

I haven't read the previous books in the series but it didn’t impede on my enjoyment in reading Chance at Redemption.

Liam owns a dive bar in partnership with his sister, giving up his life of luxury. His family had his life mapped out for him but he wanted to find his own way and do what he enjoys instead of feeling obligated.

Gwen is very much a daddy's girl and is spoilt rotten. That is until her father decides that she ought to act like an adult and be more responsible. She hopes that it's temporary and he will relent, until she finds herself in uncharted territory. Penniless!

Her only option is to take a job as a waitress in Liam's bar. Of course, Gwen thinks that the world owes her and starts off on the wrong foot. They have disagreements but Liam likes to rub her up the wrong way. At the same time, he can see past the front that she puts up and tolerates her abysmal attitude. Besides, there is an underlying sexual tension between them that's hard to hide. This turns into steamy sex and then emotions start to surface. It looks like they might just work well as a loving couple but one evening out turns into the worse nightmare. Gwen has been betrayed, but assumptions lead Liam to feel betrayed. Is there a chance for redemption?

Gwen's personality makes it hard to warm up to her, initially. She carries a lot of baggage and has a chip on her shoulder. Liam is down to earth and his influence slowly turns her into a fairly decent person. The fact that she admits her wrongs is a good start. It's an entertaining and credible story with a humorous side. It's not insta love but the gradual development of the romance is realistic. I thoroughly enjoyed this easy to read and captivating story.

I received a complimentary eARC and the views expressed are my personal opinion.

But nothing as sexy or devastating as Alejandro.

I never thought I’d see him again, but fate has seen fit to give us another chance.

Maybe this time we’ll get it right. Maybe this time he’ll stay.

Or perhaps my heart is about to be irrevocably shattered.

Only time will tell if it’s for better or worse, but one thing is certain…

Alejandro is a force to be reckoned with…maybe even best to be avoided.

But when it comes to matters of the heart, sometimes there’s no reasoning.

Sometimes…it’s pure instinct.

Taking a chance on him is like playing Russian roulette—it’s dangerous…foolish…and likely to kill me.

After reading Papi, which is based on a true story, I am really pleased that the author gave us the opportunity to explore further. Mami picks up right where Papi left off.

After a fairly long and silent absence, Alejandro turns up on Julie's doorstep. She is happy that he has returned but there is some apprehension about how to react.

The connection is instant and after the first awkard few minutes, they show how much they'd missed each other. The chemistry is hotter than ever and they are back in their comfort zone. Julie is waiting for some news which involves Alejandro and he is not unhappy about the situation. He spends more time away with his job but they have regular communications.

It's fairly obvious that Julie's children come first and any firm commitment is not an option at this stage. Their journey is quite an eye opener in the way that they make the relationship work.

It's a touching story where Alejandro helps Julie to rediscover herself after going through a very tough time. She is brave and strong. She doesn't know how their story will end but she takes comfort in their present happiness. Living in the moment and having faith. As it's a true story and from what is divulged after the end of this story, I wish Julie all the very best and the happiness that she truly deserves. This story will appeal to adult readers and I would advise to read the first book to get a true picture of this journey.

Holiday in the Hamptons (#5 From Manhattan with Love) - Sarah Morgan

Author                          Sarah Morgan
Publication Date         15 June 2017
Genre                             Contemporary Romance

The perfect summer escape…?
Professional dog-walker Felicity Knight loves everything about New York…until her ex-husband starts working at her local vet clinic. She hasn’t seen Seth Carlyle in ten years, but one glimpse of him – too gorgeous, and still too good for her – and Fliss’s heart hurts like their whirlwind marriage ended yesterday. So when her grandmother in The Hamptons needs help for the summer, it seems the perfect way to escape her past…
Their relationship might only have lasted a few scorching months, but vet Seth knows Fliss – if she’s run away to The Hamptons, it’s because she still feels their connection and it terrifies her. He let her go once before, when he didn’t know any better, but not this summer! With the help of his adorable dog Lulu, and a sprinkling of beachside magic, Seth is determined to make Fliss see that he’s never stopped loving her…

This is real rollercoaster of a romance about second chances.

Seth and Fliss, both very young had a summer holiday romance in the Hamptons. With her family background and further complications, things went horribly wrong. Lack of communications was the biggest obstacle.

It's now ten years later and neither of them have been able to forget what they had. Seth is a Vet and Fliss runs a successful dog walking business. Fliss' traumatic childhood has taught her not to show her feelings, therefore she has built this wall that nobody can get through. Not even her twin who is her business partner and best friend.

Seth now wants closure, one way or another. When they eventually talk to each other again, they discover that they really don't t know how the other feel. They both feel guilty about past events and are afraid of causing any more heartaches. It hasn't been easy for either of them and even though their feelings haven't changed, they have. Fliss is still guarded but more mature in other ways. Seth acknowledges his mistakes and will do anything to get through to Fliss. Not an easy feat!

Fliss is very protective towards her loved ones but sees herself as the bad twin. Something that's been drummed into her since early childhood. Seth is patient, determined and understanding. There is a lot of emphasis on different family dynamics and the long term effects. This is an emotional story, full of uncertainties and angst. It builds up gradually until the point where I was completely hooked. It's a beautifully written love story with a myriad of emotions. Frustration, anger, love, passion, guilt, uncertainties and laughter. I absolutely love how it all comes together in the end. It's a journey well worth taking.

I received a complimentary eARC from the publisher via NetGalley and the views expressed are my personal opinion.

ASP of ascension - BR Myers

Author                        BR Myers
Publication Date      16 May 2017
Genre                         Young Adult Mythology
                                    Mystery Romance

Nefertari “Terry” Hughes has three rules for surviving high school:

#1 Don’t attract attention.
#2 Don’t get involved.
#3 Don’t make trouble.

A year after the accident that left her crippled and took her mother’s life, sixteen-year-old Terry just wants to keep her head down and survive her new high school. When she catches the eye of cute basketball star Zach — who happens to be the boyfriend of mean girl Allison — all hopes of flying under the radar are gone.

She is thrust even further in the spotlight when Fraser, the editor of the school newspaper, learns Mr. Hughes is the renowned archaeologist overseeing the new Egyptian display at the museum, which is rumoured to include Cleopatra’s sarcophagus. Fraser’s research leads to the fifty-year-old mystery of a girl who vanished while on a school trip to to the museum along with an artifact that may be Cleopatra’s asp.

When Mr. Hughes falls into a coma and his co-worker claims it’s the curse of Cleopatra, the stakes become too high for Terry to ignore. Terry must work with Fraser and her new candy loving friend Maude to find out what happened fifty years ago in hopes of saving her father before time runs out.

Rated T - Teen 13 and up: May contain violence, crude humour, suggestive themes and/or strong language.

ASP of ascension is a fascinating rendition of Cleopatra and the curse associated with her asp. It focuses on the trials and tribulations of students' lives in High School.

Nefertari who prefers to be called Terry is a sixteen year old trying to adjust to her new school. She has spent most of her life travelling with her archaeologist parents until the fatal accident where she lost her mother and she herself sustained severe injuries.

After the discovery of their last excavation, Terry's father has been invited to organise an exhibition in a small town. The results of her injuries have left her with lack of confidence and she is trying hard to stay "invisible". Her father being a famous archaeologist makes it even harder as her history classes just happens to have Cleopatra as the next project.

She teams up with Maude, a colourful character and Zach the basketball star. They are both impressed at her knowledge of the subject and Zach finds himself drawn to her. The problem? His girlfriend, Allison is the nasty queen bee and a bully. When she focuses on a target, she comes up with the worse possible methods of humiliation!

Fraser, the school journalist approaches her for a scoop on the rumoured Cleopatra's discovery and here begins the most unexpected investigations. They are faced with an unsolved fifty years old case of a student's disappearance. The more they delve in, the more mysteries are uncovered. Terry is tasked to find the asp which is not a priority until her father goes into an inexplicable coma. She is led to believe that finding the asp is the answer to his recovery. It's a dangerous task.

Fraser and Maude get involved in her quest and what they uncover can't be ignored. Somehow what happened fifty years ago could be linked to the present situation. This leads to a beautiful friendship between the three of them. Zach doesn't hide his attraction for Terry and when she discovers that he too, faces his own struggles, she is more than supportive.

The plot is very well orchestrated. It's very difficult to know who are friends or enemies. It's amazing at how far some would go for the greed of power. The bullies take extreme delight in demeaning their victims. The unravelling of the mysteries is intriguing and fascinating. The characters are plausible. Overall, it's a well paced and compelling mythological and historical story with a supernatural twist, romance, rivalry, jealousy, cruelty and danger. This young adult novel would appeal to readers of all ages.

I was kindly issued with an eARC from the publisher via NetGalley and the views expressed are my personal opinion.

Always in the mood for a good scare, B.R. Myers spent most of her teen years behind the covers of Lois Duncan, Ray Bradbury, and Stephen King. Her YA contemporary coming of age novel, GIRL ON THE RUN, was chosen by the Canadian Children's Book Centre as a BEST BOOK for TEENS for 2016.

When she's not putting her characters in awkward situations, she works as a registered nurse. A member of the Writer's Federation of Nova Scotia, she lives in Halifax with her husband and two children—and there is still a stack of books on her bedside table.
