The Carnelian Legacy (Carnelian #1) by Cheryl Koevoet

Author                         Cheryl Koevoet
Publication Date        4 February 2015
Genre                            Paranormal Fantasy Romance

Synopsis

Marisa MacCallum always believed that the man of her dreams was out there somewhere. The problem is—he’s in another dimension.

After the death of her father, eighteen-year-old Marisa's life is on the verge of imploding. She seeks comfort on her daily ride through the woods of Gold Hill, but when a mysterious lightning storm strikes, she is hurled into the ancient, alternate dimension of Carnelia where she is discovered by the arrogant but attractive nobleman, Ambassador Darian Fiore.

Stranded in a world teeming with monsters, maniacs and medieval knights, Marisa is forced to join Darian on a dangerous mission to negotiate peace with his cousin and archenemy, Savino da Rocha. Along the way, she starts to see Darian's softer side and finds herself falling in love. But once she learns that he is locked into an arranged marriage, her heart shatters.

When Savino falls for her charms and demands her hand in exchange for peace, Marisa is faced with an impossible choice: marry the enemy of the man she loves or betray them both and become the catalyst for a bloody war.

Review

This story starts on earth, then we are transported to Carnelia, a parallel dimension. I like the whole concept of another dimension with a totally different culture. It's a beautiful love story with lovable characters.

Marisa goes through a tragic loss and when she takes her horse for a ride to be on her own with her grief, something out of this world takes place to change her life completely.

Darian and Arrie are on their way to an important and difficult mission when they find Marisa in an unconscious state. When Marisa recovers, she finds herself looking at two armoured Knights! She can't quite believe that she is no longer on earth but has to face the reality of her situation. Darian finds himself with no choice but to take Marisa with them on their journey. He is wary of strangers and adopts an aloof attitude towards Marisa in case she is a spy for Savino his cousin who is power hungry. They have to face danger and monsters along the way and their mission doesn't turn out quite as expected.

During that time Marisa finds herself drawn to Darian but he makes it obvious that he has protocols to follow and duties come before happiness even when he is falling too. To make matters worse Savino shows an obvious interest in Marisa, putting her in an awkward situation.

There are twists along the way but what transpires at the ball towards the end of the first part of this Trilogy is far from what I expected.

I like everything about this book. Darian's loyalty to his cause and the length he goes to, to do the right thing. Arrie is witty and supportive to Marisa whilst staying loyal to Darian. Marisa's strength of character even with everything she has endured and still enduring. The description of the sceneries and emotions are very graphic and palpable.

I like the part when Darian finds "the wounded heart" and explains its meaning to Marisa.

“Maybe things will start to work out for you for a change.” He turned to her, his face solemn. “I shall never forget the things we have shared on this journey".

I thoroughly enjoyed this sweet romance and would recommend to those who like the paranormal genre.

I received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Demon Road #1 by Derek Landy

Author                        Derek Landy
Publication Date       27 August 2015
Genre                          Supernatural Thriller
Synopsis
The mind-blowing new supernatural thriller from bestselling author DEREK LANDY, creator of international sensation Skulduggery Pleasant.
Full of Landy’s trademark wit, action and razor-sharp dialogue, DEMON ROAD kicks off with a shocking opener and never lets up the pace in an epic road-trip across the supernatural landscape of America. Killer cars, vampires, undead serial.

Review

This book starts with Amber being called in the the Principal's office to be reprimanded for being a trouble maker. Is she the trouble maker or the victim being overlooked because of her plain appearance?

She is faced with verbal abuse from a couple of bullies in the diner where she works, after school. When they pursue her with more taunts after her shift, she is surprised by what transpires. She faces even more surprises when she arrives home. Her life is in danger. Suddenly, she finds herself on the run with the help coming from where it's least expected.

She meets the mysterious Milo with the "cool car" who becomes her "protector". She then has to strike a deal to survive,  but this deal comes with a deadline and conditions. Milo takes her down the Demon Road where they face many obstacles. There are supernatural beings such as vampires and witches everywhere they turn. They meet Glen along the way and he brings humour and laughter to this dark tale.

Time is ticking. Will Amber manage to reach the end of her bargain to survive? This story has all the ingredients of a good paranormal story and held my attention from beginning to end. Although it's a young adult novel, I would recommend to readers of all ages.

I received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

 About the Author
Derek Landy is an Irish writer and screenwriter. In addition to the bestselling children's/YA series ofSkulduggery Pleasant books, a supernatural mystery series starring Skulduggery Pleasant, a skeleton detective, and Valkyrie Cain, a young female magician, he has written two screenplays that have been made into films: the IFTA award winning "Dead Bodies" and the IFTA nominated "Boy Eats Girl". Landy himself was nominated for an IFTA for Best Script.

He doesn’t like to brag about all the awards he’s won, such as the Irish Book of the Decade, or the Red House in the UK, or all the other awards that he humbly displays on his mantelpiece. He is also far too modest to mention things like the first book being a Publisher’s Weekly Best Book of the Year, but would like to extend an invitation to Oprah to pop around one day for tea, in thanks for selecting his book for the Oprah’s Book Club Kids Reading List.

Derek plays too many video games, reads too many comics, and watches too many movies. He lives in Ireland with too many cats. Occasionally he talks to real people, but only when he absolutely has to.
He is the best-selling author of Skulduggery Pleasant.

The Planter's Wife by Dinah Jefferies

Author                        Dinah Jefferies
Publication Date       27 August 2015
Genre                          Historical Fiction Romance
Synopsis

Nineteen-year-old Gwendolyn Hooper is newly married to a rich and charming widower, eager to join him on his tea plantation, determined to be the perfect wife and mother. But life in Ceylon is not what Gwen expected. The plantation workers are resentful, the neighbours treacherous. And there are clues to the past - a dusty trunk of dresses, an overgrown gravestone in the grounds - that her husband refuses to discuss. Just as Gwen finds her feet, disaster strikes. She faces a terrible choice, hiding the truth from almost everyone, but a secret this big can't stay buried forever . . .

Review

This story is set in Ceylon during 1900s when it was a British Colony.

Gwen is married to Laurence who has returned to Ceylon to attend to his tea plantation. She is quite excited about seeing her husband and at the same time, she is apprehensive about going to unknown territory.

Laurence is happy to see Gwen but she feels that he is a little "distant". Gwen misses her cousin and best friend Fran, especially as Verity, Laurence's sister is not very welcoming.

When Fran arrives, they all attend a ball and Gwen finds herself unsettled by Christina, a widow, intent on monopolising Laurence's attention. After that night everything becomes complicated and the issue of racism and discrimination is very much to the fore. There are secrets which when uncovered, could make or break the relationship between Laurence and Gwen.

This book is very well researched and the descriptions of the traditions, the places and way of life are very vivid. It's a beautiful and heartfelt story which is full of uncertainties and sorrow. Will Gwen and Laurence survive the unrests, doubts, fear, apprehension, blackmail, guilt and   heartaches?

I found this story fascinating and it was almost like watching a movie as everything unfolded. I would recommend to those who like romance novels set in a historical era.

I received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an  honest review.

In this third book in the sexy, suspenseful “The Secret Life of Amy Bensen” series from New York Times bestselling author Lisa Renee Jones, we meet Amy’s brother Chad—and the woman who either loves him or wants him dead.

Six years ago, Chad’s hunt for a dangerous treasure turned deadly when his family home was set on fire, his parents killed. Faking his and his sister Amy’s death to protect her from further retaliation, he set her up in a new life with a friend’s help, letting her believe he’d died.

But now the men who hired Chad to find the treasure have found him, imprisoning and torturing him to learn where it’s hidden. A dark-haired beauty named Gia helps him escape, promising him access to his worst enemy. And as he tries to unravel the deep secrets of the past, he starts falling for her…only to discover she’s not what she seems.

Unable to trust anyone, Chad focuses on only two things: protecting his sister Amy and getting revenge. Is love even possible in the midst of heartache?

Review

This is the third instalment of "the Secret Life of Amy Bensen"  and it's just as captivating and intriguing as the first two in this series.

In the last book Amy was told that her brother, Chad is still alive and this part is narrated from Chad's POV. He starts with the events which took place six years ago on the tragic night when his life along with Amy's changed completely.

He is now  being held captive by Sheridan who wants him to hand over a valuable but dangerous object if it falls in the wrong hands! Just when he thinks that his time is up, Gaia comes to his rescue. He escapes with her help but trust doesn't come easy to him in view of past betrayals. Is she setting him up to obtain the information on the mysterious object? He has been betrayed by a woman in the past.

Gaia works for Sheridan but she has her own reasons to help Chad but knowing what she does about him, she keeps her own secrets. He ensures that she is aware of how ruthless he can be if she betrays him. Chad doesn't trust anybody else besides Jared, who has helped him to keep his sister safe for the past six years. Jared brings him up to date with Amy's situation and he is not very happy to learn about her involvement with Liam. After all Liam is a billionaire and money breeds greed as proven by Sheridan.

As the story unfolds, answers to the questions about Amy's situation are revealed and the pace is just as fast with the ongoing new developments. There is danger in every corner and knowing who to trust becomes increasingly difficult. The attraction between Gaia and Chad is very obvious but again, trust or lack of gets in the way. Will they be able to trust if they manage to get out of this dangerous situation? Is Sheridan the only enemy?

This instalment is full of enough twists and turns as well as palpable emotions to make it a real page turner.  It's nice to catch up with Liam, Amy and Tellar. There is one more part to come. Can it get any better? I for one am looking forward to see how it all ends.

I would recommend to all romance lovers. Great story line, well worth reading.

Author                            Jocelyn Han
Publication Date           21 July 2015
Genre                              New Adult SciFi Romance
Synopsis

After her father’s death, the last thing Ava Windsor wants is to leave Earth and move to an Elite colony on the moon for the next ten months. Nicolas Carter, a man she doesn’t even remember meeting, is to be her custodian until she reaches the age of twenty-one. Until then, she is not allowed to touch the money her dad has left her. Being the only child of a disowned Elite father and a common mother just got a lot more complicated.

But surviving among the Luna Six Elitists who treat commoners as servants should have been the least of Ava’s worries. Nicolas Carter is nothing like she expected. He condemns the Elite lifestyle, he is a lot younger than her father, and he is definitely way sexier.
Ten months on the moon seem like an eternity if you know you shouldn’t be falling for your guardian… but just can’t help yourself.

A sweet, steamy romance novella for lovers of New Adult with a hint of Futuristic.

**CONTENT WARNING: Due to mature content, recommended for readers aged 18+**

Review

This story is set in the future where colonies from earth have migrated to other planets, including the moon.

Ava loses her father unexpectedly and finds that she has to go and live on the moon with her guardian Nic,  her father’s adopted brother. She is half Elite whilst her father’s family is Elite. She doesn’t believe in the caste system, therefore it's not surprising that she is very reluctant to leave earth but she has no choice until she is twenty one in eight months' time.

Nic lives on a farm in one of the lunar colonies and although he tries to keep his Elite family happy, he helps those less fortunate as he doesn't believe in the system either. When he goes to meet and greet Ava, she is surprised when he introduces himself. She expects an old boring "uncle"  but in her own words,  finds "sex on legs" instead . There is an instant attraction between them but Nic does his best to honour his guardian's duties even if they are not related by blood whilst Ava tries to come to terms with the fact that Nic is unattainable.

Will Nic give in to his feelings and risk losing his family and status? Will Ava be able to fight her attraction to Nic?

This is a short easy read about "forbidden love". It's very well narrated and the futuristic story line makes it even more interesting. It would appeal to those who like a good steamy romance with science fiction elements. It's a promising start to a new series.

I received this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Publication Date    25 August 2015
Genre                       Contemporary Romance

Synopsis

Two men. Both brothers. One life-changing decision.

I made my choice. One perfect weekend assured me I was right. One set of pictures proved me wrong.

Graduating college was supposed to be a happy time. Instead, I lost my best friend and suffered the worst kind of betrayal. Now, my whole life is in flux. I need my best friend. I need answers. There’s only one way to fix this. It’s time for a change. It’s time to take back control of my life, and the only way to do it is to face my problems head-on.

Even if it means walking into the lion’s den to do it.

Review

After reading book one, I couldn't wait to get my hands on book two and the way book two ended made it even more of a compulsion to read book three. No disappointment there and what a finale!

Joe is devastated with what she is faced with after her weekend away with Rebel. She reunites with her best friend Annie to ask for advice which leads her to make a decision on how to best deal with this issue.

Rebel doesn't really know what is going but he is not one to give up very easily and is determined to find out why Joe's behaviour has changed.

Ransom is still lurking in the background and Florence is doing her utmost best to make a bad situation worse.

This last instalment flows as easily as the first two and is full of love, lust, passion and the green eyed monster to complicate matters.

I would fully recommend this trilogy to those who like a sensual romance with a different story line and full of drama.

I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Publication Date    9 June 2015
Genre                       Paranormal Fantasy

Synopsis

The List. That Signified Finality.
The Journey. That Would Span The Globe.
The Sacrifice. That Would Decide The Outcome.
The Choice. That Could Unleash Evil On Earth.
The End Is Only The Beginning...

“You have terminal cancer.”

London Patterson, a seemingly healthy young woman, had her entire life ahead of her. That was until four little words brought everything to a screeching halt. As the shock and grief begin to fade, London decides to map out her last year and embark on an epic journey to complete a bucket list. She wants to do the things she’s been afraid to do in her life, step out of her self-contained box, and see the world. What she didn’t expect was for a mysterious stranger named Adam to breeze into her life like a breath of fresh air.

Adam offers to help London complete her list on one condition…that she sees it through to the end. Agreeing on those terms, the two set out on an adventure of a lifetime. But London soon realizes that Adam isn’t quite…human. Along their journey odd occurrences happen that cause London to question who or what Adam is and why he’s helping her.

Follow London as she checks off her bucket list in this inspiring new Urban Fantasy novel from Taylor Dawn.

Review

I didn't know  quite what  to expect from this book but I found it interesting and enjoyable. The paranormal element is different to any other books I have read.

London is in her early twenties and is diagnosed with terminal cancer. After the initial reaction of denial, she decides to make a bucket list instead of moping around waiting for the worse to happen.

Adam volunteers to assist her in accomplishing her wishes from the bucket list. She agrees and they soon find themselves in a comfortable frienship. Adam organises the events on her list with flair. There is a lot of traveling involved and the places they visited are very well described, so much so that I could imagine myself being in these places. There are a few clues about Adam's true nature but London justifies what she sees and carries on with her wishes on the bucket list.

Then there is Caine who tries to interfere with London's and Adam's plan. At this point, it becomes quite predictable but just as enjoyable. The real twists come with London's decision when she is offered a choice and the outcome of her decision.

I like London's strength of character and her ability to concentrate on the positives instead of thinking of the worse. She is very witty and her interactions with Adam are good fun. All in all I enjoyed reading "Saving London".

I would recommend to those who like an easy read about true friendship with sadness, fun and laughter.

I received this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

C.D. Taylor/Taylor Dawn began writing as an item to check off her bucket list. She resides in the southernmost part of Illinois, right on the mighty Mississippi river. She enjoys the quiet country life with her husband, son and the many farm animals that make up the rest of the family. She. decided that farm life was just a little too mundane, so she started writing erotica and fantasy to liventhings up, so far so good. C.D./Taylor entered cosmetology school right out of High School and practiced the art of hair styling for 12 years. When she isn't writing, she can usually be found sitting around a table making people laugh. She has always wanted to be a standup comic. She loves pulling practical jokes, dresses up in a costume every Halloween and believes that dancing is the key to a happy life (even if you aren't a good dancer). She believes that life shouldn't be taken too seriously, we will never get out alive anyway. More than anything, she is a kid at heart, she doesn't believe in bedtimes, eating everything on her plate, or having ice cream only for dessert. Synopsis

All three books in the bestselling Loose Ends series are now available in one neat package! Follow Gabriel Roberts and Nicole Langley as they tie up the loose ends of their lust-to-love story in this sizzling erotic romance.

#1 CRUSH (Loose Ends, #1)

Nicole Langley’s #1 Crush has always been Gabriel Roberts, but settling for being a friendly acquaintance has had to be enough.

Gabriel has always seen Nicole as his good friend’s very pretty, but extremely off limits baby sister.

Then a hot summer day and an even hotter discovery pushes them over the lines of friendship, over the lines of unrequited desire, and into each other's arms.

Will they indulge and move on? Or will this crush turn into something more, something deeper? Something that leaves loose ends begging to be tied…

CLOSER (Loose Ends, #2)

After a whirlwind week of hot sex and growing affection, Nicole and Gabriel were forced to part ways and to return to real life. For a while they danced around each other, meeting up when they could, the distance between them rivaled only by their desire to be together again.

Now these lovers are no longer star-crossed. They’re in the same city at the same time and can finally indulge their insatiable passion. At least until Gabriel’s increasingly popular band goes on tour.

But the ticking clock of his budding music career isn’t the only obstacle to contend with. A blast from Gabriel’s wild past, a guy that kept Nicole warm in Gabriel’s absence, and fear of what the future holds all converge just as they’ve begun to realize this might be love…

Author's Note: This book contains strong language and sexual content with dark elements, some of which readers may find uncomfortable.

MIND OVER MATTER (Loose Ends, #3)

They said they would try. They said they would give their love a chance.

But when the mistakes of Gabriel's past clashed with Nicole's hopes for the future, they realized love wasn't enough. They tied up the loose ends of their broken hearts and walked away.

Now, Gabriel's career is on a meteoric rise and he is back to his bachelor ways. He told Nicole he couldn't promise forever and did his best to let her go, but these days he wonders if he spoke too soon.

Nicole has a new life, a new man, and she refuses to look back. To everyone around her though, not looking back looks an awful lot like running scared from the past.

With Jackie and Ian's wedding approaching, a reunion between the best man and the maid of honor is to be expected. What they don't expect is for the olive branch of friendship to catch fire with a love and need that is stronger than even their best intentions.

They called it quits. But is it really over? They still love each other. But does that even matter when they've made up their minds that there's no going back?
