Through the Riptide by Bert Murray & Phillis Fahrie

Author                                Bert Murray
Publication Date               26 May 2015
Genre                                  Contemporary Romance
Rating                                  5 *****

Synopsis

Finally the sequel to Amazon bestseller, Colin Preston Rocked And Rolled...

An attractive thirty year old professional woman leaves NYC after being attacked there and finds a new job by the seashore. She has to decide whether she will date her ex-boyfriend or a mysterious new man she meets on a bus ride. Filled with passion, emotion, romance and the excitement of a summer by the sea...

Review

Lindsey is followed to her apartment  on her way from work one night. Her neighbour intervenes but the impact of the attack leaves its mark on Lindsey and her confidence is quite understandably shattered.

Karl, her ex boyfriend offers her a job in the Hamptons where she might be able to put this unpleasant experience behind. She accepts on the condition that their relationship stays strictly professional but this doesn't stop Karl from trying! Even when old feelings resurface Lindsey sticks to her gun. Karl appears to be very good in running his business but is neither reliable nor trustworthy when it comes to his personal relationships.

When Lindsey meets Colin, she takes an instant liking to him but he is very aloof and doesn't say much about himself when he does try to make conversations. They meet again by chance and strike a friendship which is somewhat uncomfortable to begin with. Whilst out walking on the beach, Colin starts to open up and confides in Lindsey. They witness someone being attacked and this brings back Lindsey's bad memories. She in turn confides in Colin but can either of them trust again after their past experiences with bad relationships?

Jasmine becomes Lindsey's best friend in the Hamptons but I found it hard to warm up to her.

I haven't read the first book in this series and although this one can be read as a standalone, I would have liked to have met Karl, Colin and Jasmine when they were college students. This novel still captured and held my interest. There is so much going on and with all the twists and turns it becomes a compelling read.

Publication Date          26 June 2015
Genre                             Contemporary Romance
Rating                             4 ****

Synopsis

Once upon a time, Mercedes ‘Mercy’ Hernandez had the most enormous crush on her best friend’s older brother, Seb Madison. Now, though, she can’t stand the beast. Forget that he’s as spine-tinglingly gorgeous as ever. He’s a lousy brother and a manipulative bastard, not that she ever thinks about that disastrous one night stand they once had…

Still riddled with guilt over the death of his parents, billionaire loner Seb Madison has spent so long emotionally shut off that when beautiful, fiery Mercy bursts into his life again, he doesn’t know what’s hit him. All he knows is that she confuses him and he doesn’t like it.

Yet their chemistry hasn’t faded and, when hostility turns to attraction, a no-strings affair seems the logical solution. Mercy’s taking a much needed break from her family’s Argentinian vineyard to study for an MBA and Seb doesn’t do relationships. Neither have either the time or inclination for anything other than weekends-only red-hot sex. Or do they…?

Review

Mercy has had a crush on one of her best friend’s brother Seb since she was sixteen years old. Seb feels guilty for the accident which involved his parents and in the process, he behaves badly towards his sister  Zel.

When Zel finds herself in a desperate situation, Mercy decides to confront Seb and make him aware of the effects his behaviour is having on his sister. She finds herself spending the night with him instead. Five years later, she finds herself on his door steps once again to make him see reasons  but this time they both fight the attraction towards each other and Mercy leaves after speaking her mind. Seb goes on the defensive and denies that there is anything wrong with him or his relationship with his sister.

Mercy sees right through Seb and sets out to help him. They agree to have a casual relationship, no strings attached but as they spend more time together, it becomes apparent that they are heading towards hurt and destruction. Whilst Mercy is prepared to accept the way she feels, Seb remains indifferent or so he thinks! Then comes the point of no return. Will Seb come to his senses and put the past behind him to start living his life?

Mercy is a strong, passionate and loyal character whereas Seb lives with guilt which turns him into a broody character. It's an easy to read romance which I thoroughly enjoyed reading.

About the Author

Lucy spent her formative years lost in the world of Mills & Boon romance when she really ought to have been paying attention to her teachers. Up against sparkling heroines, gorgeous heroes and the magic of falling in love, trigonometry and absolute ablatives didn't stand a chance.
But as she couldn't live in a dream world forever, she eventually acquired a degree in languages and an eclectic collection of jobs. A stroll to the River Thames one Saturday morning led her to her very own hero. The minute she laid eyes on the hunky rower getting out of a boat, clad only in Lycra and carrying a 3-meter oar like it was a toothpick, she knew she'd met the man she was going to marry. Luckily the rower thought the same.
She will always be grateful to whatever it was that made her stop dithering and actually sit down to type chapter one, because dreaming up her own sparkling heroines and gorgeous heroes is pretty much her idea of the perfect job.
Originally a Londoner, Lucy now lives in Spain where she spends much of the time reading, failing to finish cryptic crosswords and trying to convince herself that lying on the beach really is the best way to work.

The other Me by Saskia Sarginson

Author                            Saskia Sarginson
Publication Date           5 March 2015
Genre                              Contemporary Romance Fiction
Rating                              5 *****

Synopsis

Eliza Bennet has the life she's always dreamed of. She's who she wants to be, and she's with the man she loves.
But Eliza is living a lie. Her real name is Klaudia Myer. And Klaudia is on the run. She's escaping her old life, and a terrible secret buried at the heart of her family.
This is the story of Eliza and Klaudia - one girl, two lives and a lie they cannot hide from.
Review

Klaudia has been home schooled with very strict parents. It's now time for her to start going to school but without the experience of socialising with kids of her age group, she finds herself in the deep end.
She endures discrimination, bullying and isolation because of her parentage. When she leaves home to continue her studies in Leeds, she sees this as an opportunity to reinvent herself and becomes Eliza. She lies to her friends about her family background and hides what she is really doing in Leeds from her parents. Then comes the fateful time when she visits her parents for the Christmas break. The news she receives on arrival is a complete shock and she feels partly responsible. Guilt sets in and the biggest problem is how to deal with the lies and put things right. She risks losing her best friend and her true love.

The truth eventually comes out and it turns out that Klaudia is not the only one hiding behind lies and secrets. Part of the story is told in Klaudia's/Eliza's POV in 1980s expanding into 1990s. The other half of the story is told in Ernst's, Klaudia's uncle POV in the period leading up to World War II. Despite the big difference in the time period, the story is so well written, everything falls nicely into place.

The discriminations and prejudices carried over from other decades can be distressing but the whole story is quite believable. It's one of the stories which really tugged at my heart strings and which I will remember for a time to come.

I received this ARC from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Her unfaithful rock star boyfriend, Ray Ryker, may have some competition in a handsome young stranger, Adrian McAllister, who she first only imagined in her dreams.

The thing is, he’s no longer a fantasy. He’s now not only involved in her thoughts but her everyday life as well.

While trying to uncover the identity of the mysterious killer she can’t help but wonder if the handsome stranger may have had something to do with it.

It doesn't take long for Sidney to realize she doesn't trust either of the men in her life, not Ray, her adulterous boyfriend, or Adrian, the green-eyed charmer.

Or she could be the next to die…

Review

In the first book of the series Sidney was attacked with a shovel whilst she was gardening. Ray her long time boyfriend was staying with her after one of their breakups.

This part picks up with Sidney being taken to the hospital and a very frantic Ray. Nobody knows the identity of the attacker. There are various
speculations but no supportive evidence. Sidney's behaviour is quite erratic. She is in love with Ray despite everything but at the same time, she appears to be falling for the secretive Adrian who just happens to be the man in her recurring dreams. Adrian has a tendency to appear and disappear when least expected. He is also fascinated by Sidney's pendant which also features in her dreams.

Sidney decides that she is no longer the girl who runs away from difficulties but she appears to be doing just that. Then there is the mysterious and elusive red haired Lily. Samael's sister in Sidney's dreams is also a red head. The plot thickens.

"Between Loves" is full of twists and turns and I guess the final part in the series will reveal all. The heat is definitely on and I look forward to see the outcome of this intriguing paranormal romance.

Synopsis

Twentysomething Kat Reid is loving life as an in-demand Hollywood makeup artist. She has absolutely no interest in rock ’n’ roll, but in order to pay the mortgage, she agrees to work on the set of a rock video for the world-famous rockers known as Bad Habit…which brings her face-to-face with Nico Nyx, lead singer of Bad Habit and Adonis in the flesh.
However, the fiercely independent Kat isn’t impressed by the hard-living, womanizing rock star. But when Nico’s model girlfriend shows up to the set drunk and Kat is tapped to replace her as the video’s sexy bride, her combustible chemistry with Nico suddenly threatens to consume the set. Nico feels it, too—and becomes determined to win Kat over, body and soul. Yet behind his rock god swagger, Nico hides a dark secret. Can he rock Kat’s world forever, or will he just break her heart?
Review
Nico is the lead singer of the rock band Bad Habit. Kat is a make up artist who is not too fond of musicians, although she doesn't have a problem working with them.

When Kat is asked to stand in for the model who is a little worse for wear, prior to a video shoot, her first instinct is refusal. She changes her mind when she hears how much money is involved. After all, it's just the one shoot and the money she receives can go a long way towards paying off some of her financial commitments!

Nico is totally besotted by her and she is not totally unaffected either! His past is full of secrets but then again Kat has her fair share too.

It's a story about love, loyalty, betrayal and suspense. I like the way Nico loves unconditionally even when his past comes back to haunt him and threatens everything in his life. Kat’s loyalty is quite remarkable but will their love prevail?

Seeking the Sun by Jason P. Crawford

Author                                Jason P. Crawford
Publication Date              14  November 2014
Genre                                 New Adult Paranormal
Rating                                 4 ****

Synopsis

Daphne Gianakos begins having strange dreams as she prepares for college life at the University of Florida. A chance encounter with a striking young man triggers conflicting emotions within her, but his identity challenges her entire worldview - he is the last surviving Greek god.
When he goes missing, Daphne must learn who she is, who she was, and the truth about what has happened to the gods...or the world will pay the price.

Seeking the Sun is a New Adult-style Paranormal Romance novel, packed with action and character-driven plot. If you're looking for a unique blend of mythology and contemporary reality, Seeking the Sun will not disappoint.

Review

Daphne starts her new life as a college student and despite feeling nervous she is soon put at ease by her room mate, Chloe who is very friendly! Daphne has been having recurring dreams of being chased by a strange man and when she comes face to face with him, she panics but he is not easily dissuaded.

The story is based on Greek Mythology and the implications of religious conflicts. Although it's written for the modern times, I like the interpretations of life on Olympus before the Gods were betrayed and destroyed, leaving only Apollo behind. The source of the betrayal comes as quite a surprise.

It's a well written story about reincarnation, magic, love and various mythical beings. Daphne is a strong and interesting character who soon adapts to all the unnatural occurrences around her. I soon found myself immersed in the story, not having a clue where anything was going as the goal post kept moving.

It's an interesting read with an interesting concept and would appeal to those who like mythology.

Publication Date     7 July 2015
Genre                        Young Adult Contemporary Romance
Rating                        4 ****

Synopsis

Perfect for fans of Nicholas Sparks, this breathtaking story of love and loss is guaranteed to break your heart and sweep you off your feet.

When high school senior Kelsey's identical twin sister, Michelle, dies in a car crash, Kelsey is left without her other half. The only person who doesn't know about the tragedy is Michelle's boyfriend, Peter, recently deployed to Afghanistan. But when Kelsey finally connects with Peter online, she can't bear to tell him the truth. Active duty has taken its toll, and Peter, thinking that Kelsey is Michelle, says that seeing her is the one thing keeping him alive. Caught up in the moment, Kelsey has no choice: She lets Peter believe that she is her sister.

As Kelsey keeps up the act, she crosses the line from pretend to real. Soon, Kelsey can't deny that she's falling, hard, for the one boy she shouldn't want.

Review

Kelsey and Michelle are identical twins but their characters are totally different.

Michelle has a fateful accident which brings Kelsey to realise how much she doesn't know about her sister. Their parents deal with the grief in their own way, not realising the effects of this loss on Kelsey. She is trying to keep her sister's memory alive by doing some of the things Michelle used to do.

Peter is Michelle's boyfriend who is currently on deployment and totally unaware of her death. Kelsey has all the good intentions of telling Peter but ends up impersonating Michelle to spare him any more heartaches when she realises that being away from home is affecting him badly. The longer she takes, the closer they become and the more difficult it becomes for her to tell him the truth. She finds herself so deep that she doesn't know how to handle the situation.

The truth eventually has to come out and when it does, will Peter be able to forgive Kelsey?

It's a gripping story which shows how everyone copes with grief in different ways even when these ways are wrong.
