Synopsis

CAMERON

Life’s the shit!

Chicks squeal over how wild and yummy I am, play their silly games trying to tie me down. But I’m free as a bird, doing what makes life life: kicking extreme-sport-ass!

I base jump, snowboard, bungee jump. I do anything for the rush.

Then, Ingela blows into town for college—a cool Swedish blast of trouble. Foulmouthed and runway-gorgeous, the girl seeps in like poison and melts the freaking brain.

To Ingela I am what chicks were to me: pastime, leisure, entertainment, pleasure. She’s killing me, and I’m digging it. There’s a new rush in town! Yeah, I hunt down my highs, and now the chase is on. I’ll catch her soon enough, just, what’s the deal with her ex?

BO

With Ingela, sex is a dance. A slow tango where skin flows over skin. It is slick readiness, a quiet welcome. It’s smooth, warm, right, and all wrong.

On and off. On and off. Again, she’s wrecked with grief. It’s a reminder of how I destroy her, how crushed relationships shouldn’t be revived.

We’ve done this for years, now, but clearly we’re in for more.

Review

When I read Leon's Way, Mrs Dee's last novel, Ingela became one of my favourite character and it's so nice to get to read about her own journey with Cameron.

Cameron and Ingela aka Inga are both students who work at Leon's club, Smothers.

Cameron is a very popular guy who enjoys extreme sports and is very much of a ladies' man. He has a platonic relationship with Inga who left Sweden to get away from her ex boyfriend Bo but cannot quite get over him.

As Cameron and Inga get to know each other better, they find that they could be more than friends. A difficult situation,  with Inga feeling the way she does about Bo.

This romantic novel has all the ingredients I like in a book. Despite everything going on, I like the injection of humour which had me chuckling or laughing out loud.

So yeah. I went on the emotional rollercoaster with Inga, Cameron and Bo. I look forward to reading Bo's own story.

I received this ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.

About the Author

Originally from Norway, I moved to the United States twelve years ago. I hold a Master’s degree in languages and taught Spanish at college level before settling in at the Savannah College of Art and Design as an adviser.

I write New Adult fiction, sometimes with a paranormal twist—like in “Shattering Halos,” published by The Wild Rose Press in February 24th 2014 and in “Stargazer,” released November 2014. The first book I’ve self-published was the New Adult Contemporary novel “Pandora Wild Child,” which made me a proud indie author in October 28th 2014.

I specialize in impulsive heroines, bad-boys, and good-boys running amok. Then, there’s the intense love, physical and emotional attraction beyond reason—sensory overload for the reader as well as for the characters. Like in real life, I hope you’re unable to predict what comes next in my stories.

Yes, so I write what I love to read, and depending on the reader, you’ll find my books to be a fast-paced emotional rollercoaster—or disturbing because the struggles of love aren’t your thing. Here’s to hoping you have the same reading vice as me!

Author                    Cynthia Austin
Publication Date   28 April 2015
Genre                      Young Adult Paranormal Romance
Rating                      5 *****

Synopsis

Sidney Sinclair was living the dream of any eighteen year-old girl…

A handsome rock star boyfriend, a closet full of designer clothes, a limousine service at her beck and call, and a mansion in the hills of Los Angeles.

Even with all that glamour and excitement at her fingertips, she still feels as if she’s been missing something in her life so she decides to leave.

While trying her best to put her dysfunctional romantic relationship aside and tend to her beloved Granny, Sidney unexpectedly stumbles upon an intriguing emerald pendant boxed away in her grandmother’s closet.

Soon she learns it once belonged to her long-lost mother who committed suicide when she was just a baby. Suddenly feeling emotionally connected to the woman who had birthed her, Sidney begins to wear the necklace.

This sends her on a whirlwind journey that alternates between fantasy and reality…

Almost immediately, she starts having dreams linked to the mysterious pendant. As danger begins to seep into her life, Sidney refuses to remove the necklace and instead documents each dream to help her further understand them. However, she soon begins to wonder if they are dreams meant to bond her to a mother whom she never knew?

Or a subconscious warning that threatens her very life?

Review

Sidney aka Sid is eighteen when she moves to LA to support her long term boyfriend Ray realise his dream as a Rock Star. She has everything most girls can only dream of but shortly afterwards, her grandmother who brought her up since she was a baby suffers from a stroke and she returns home to look after her.

Whilst tidying up her grandmother's room, she comes across a pendant which belonged to her mother and decides to wear it.  She starts having recurring dreams which soon fade when she wakes up.  The nature of these dreams are fairly obscure and Sid starts to keep a diary to try and make sense of them. At the same time, she is trying to keep her now fragile relationship with Ray whilst working and looking after her grandmother. She is a strong, dedicated and down to earth character.

Then there is Adrian who claims to be stopping by to see to some personal business. I must admit that I find him intriguing. Who is he really?

I like the twists and turns in this first part of the series and the way it ends has only piqued my interest even more, to find out what happens next.

This book would appeal to young adults who like their romance with plenty of suspense, heartache, love and betrayal with a touch of the paranormal.

I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

The closer you come (the original heartbreakers #1) by Gena Showalter

Author                           Gena Showalter
Publication Date          1 April 2015
Genre                             Contemporary Romance 18+
Rating                             5 *****

Synopsis

New York Times bestselling author Gena Showalter introduces the Original Heartbreakers, where three not-quite-reformed bad boys are about to meet the women who will bring them to their knees.

Just released from prison, Jase Hollister has only one goal: stay out of trouble. Strawberry Valley, Oklahoma, sounds like the perfect place for him and his two brothers-by-circumstance to settle down and live a nice, simple life. Model citizen isn’t exactly this rugged bachelor’s default setting—especially when it comes to a certain hot-blooded Southern beauty—but he's determined to play by the rules.

Brook Lynn Dillon has always been the responsible type. Not that it’s done her much good. The down-on-her-luck waitress is broke, single and wouldn’t know fun if it bit her. Or so she thinks. Jase makes bad look oh, so good. Dangerous, sexy and tempting as sin, he is everything she never knew she wanted. Passion sizzles between them, but is it enough to melt his resistance? After all, the right kind of trouble might be just what he needs…

Review

Loved the first book and loved this one just as much.

Jase has moved to Strawberry Valley with his friends, West and Beck after being away for ten years. They are childhood friends and have been through a lot together strengthening their bonds. Unfortunately Jase did something drastic and stupid when he was a teenager and he is still regretting the consequences. He doesn't find it easy to trust anyone besides West and Beck but he is trying to adjust to his new life.

Brook Lynn has always lived in Strawberry Valley. After losing both her parents, she finds herself forever chasing after her older sister as well as keeping more than one job to make ends meet. Her first encounter with Jase is somewhat unusual and awkward but she catches his eyes and she is not totally oblivious to the power he radiates either. The chemistry between them is very palpable but they both want different things in life and end up playing cat and mouse.

Just when they think everything will work out for them, Jase's past comes back with a vengeance, taking them back to square one.

I found the love and  loyalty between Brook Lynn and her sister very genuine and endearing. West, Jase and Beck are just as supportive and loyal to each other.

I look forward to reading Beck's and West's stories.

Redemption Road by Lisa Ballantyne

Author                              Lisa Ballantyne
Publication Date             8 January 2015
Genre                                Thriller/Romance
Rating                                5 *****

Synopsis

The crash is the unravelling of Margaret Holloway. Trapped inside a car about to explode, she is rescued by a scarred stranger who then disappears. Margaret remembers little, but she's spent her life remembering little - her childhood is full of holes and forgotten memories. And now she has a burning desire to discover who she is, why her life has been shrouded in secrets, and if it has anything to do with the mysterious man who saved her life.

In a thriller that flits effortlessly between past and present, this is a harsh, gritty yet ultimately uplifting journey of an estranged father and daughter, exploring the strength of family ties and our huge capacity for forgiveness.

Review

Margaret also known as Moll is a school teacher, happily married with two children. On her way home from work one evening, she gets caught up in a blizzard on the motorway which consequently leads to a pile up with many casualties. Margaret is trapped in her car, about to go up in flames when a stranger appears in the middle of nowhere and saves her life before he disappears. This accident triggers something in Margaret and she feels like something has been missing from her life and at the same time she sets about finding her saviour.

Then we are taken back in time by eighteen years to meet twenty six year old George who lives in Glasgow and comes from a family well known for committing crimes such as extortion, murder, fraud and more. George is nothing like his father or brothers on the criminal front and wants nothing more than having his own happy family, something he never had growing up not even now. He dreams of reuniting with Kathleen, the love of his life and his daughter Moll. He sets out to do just that but makes a terrible mistake in the process and ends up going on the run from the authorities.

Angus is an ambitious journalist who dreams about becoming an international celebrity but everything he does goes against what he should be doing according to what he believes in. He sets out to find the kidnapper and bring the "victim" safely home but merely for his own selfish reasons.

The story alternates from today's perspectives and those of eighteen years ago but still flows nicely and seeing the characters as they were then and as they are now makes it even more credible.

I really like George and the way he comes across despite having a difficult and unhappy life. His love for Moll is very tangible and what he goes through is very heartbreaking. The effects of psychological scars come across very strongly as much as those of true love and compassion.

I absolutely got drawn into this novel and will definitely read more of this author's  work.

I received this ARC from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Talon #1 by Julie Kagawa

Author                          Julie Kagawa
Publication Date         28 October 2014
Genre                            Young Adult Paranormal Romance
Rating                            5 *****

Synopsis

In Julie Kagawa's groundbreaking modern fantasy series, dragons walk among us in human form.

Long ago, dragons were hunted to near extinction by the Order of St. George, a legendary society of dragon slayers. Hiding in human form and growing their numbers in secret, the dragons of Talon have become strong and cunning, and they're positioned to take over the world with humans none the wiser.

Ember and Dante Hill are the only sister and brother known to dragonkind. Trained to infiltrate society, Ember wants to live the teen experience and enjoy a summer of freedom before taking her destined place in Talon. But destiny is a matter of perspective, and a rogue dragon will soon challenge everything Ember has been taught. As Ember struggles to accept her future, she and her brother are hunted by the Order of St. George.

Soldier Garret Xavier Sebastian has a mission to seek and destroy all dragons, and Talon's newest recruits in particular. But he cannot kill unless he is certain he has found his prey—and nothing is certain about Ember Hill. Faced with Ember's bravery, confidence and all-too-human desires, Garret begins to question everything that the Order has ingrained in him—and what he might be willing to give up to find the truth about dragons.

Review

Talon is an organisation of dragons living amongst humans and constantly hunted by the Order of St George, a special and highly trained army solely for this purpose.

Ember and Dante are dragon twins which is unheard of in the dragon world. Now that they are sixteen, they are sent to learn how to blend in and assimilate human behaviour. They have human guardians who report to Talon about their progress. The twins are expecting to have a real summer break, surfing, soaking up the sun and do all the things that teenagers do during their summer holidays but it would appear that Talon has its own plan.

Garret is a highly trained and experienced member of the Order of St George who is sent to identify the female dragon and eliminate her. Although it's not easy to identify a dragon in human form, Intel points in Ember's direction. It's interesting to see Garret's reaction to Ember and vice versa on the first time they meet. After all they are both preys in different ways. They both start questioning what they have been led to believe but taking action in any form is near impossible.

Ember is not happy about her life being dictated by Talon but Dante adheres by the rules even though he loves his sister dearly and very often gets her out of trouble.

Then there is the mysterious Riley who appears to know more about Talon's ways,  reason why he is now a rogue dragon. I like the way the story unfolds and how nothing is obvious or predictable but very consistent even when it keeps you guessing. I like the way this instalment ends and now I want to know how Dante goes about the task he has been allocated not to forget the fate of Ember, Garret and Riley!

The next book in the series is released at the end of this month and needless to say that I await in anticipation.

I received this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

About the Author

Julie Kagawa was born in Sacramento, California. But nothing exciting really happened to her there. So, at the age of nine she and her family moved to Hawaii, which she soon discovered was inhabited by large carnivorous insects, colonies of house geckos, and frequent hurricanes. She spent much of her time in the ocean, when she wasn't getting chased out of it by reef sharks, jellyfish, and the odd eel.

When not swimming for her life, Julie immersed herself in books, often to the chagrin of her schoolteachers, who would find she hid novels behind her Math textbooks during class. Her love of reading led her to pen some very dark and gruesome stories, complete with colored illustrations, to shock her hapless teachers. The gory tales faded with time, but the passion for writing remained, long after she graduated and was supposed to get a real job.
To pay the rent, Julie worked in different bookstores over the years, but discovered the managers frowned upon her reading the books she was supposed to be shelving. So she turned to her other passion: training animals. She worked as a professional dogtrainer for several years, dodging Chihuahua bites and overly enthusiastic Labradors, until her first book sold and she stopped training to write full-time.

Julie now lives in Louisville, Kentucky, where the frequency of shark attacks are at an all time low. She lives with her husband, two obnoxious cats, one Australian Shepherd who is too smart for his own good, and the latest addition, a hyper-active Papillon puppy.

Julie is the author of the bestselling Iron Fey series. The Iron Knight the fourth title in The Iron Fey series publishes in Jan 2012. The Immortal Rules, the first title in a brand new series publishes in May 2012.
